League hopes to work with Myrtle Beach city officials to solve hockey rink headaches

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The Grand Strand Adult Hockey League was forced to cancel a slate of games after what they’re calling ‘unsafe playing conditions’ at the Myrtle Beach Roller Rink.

“It’s a little frustrating because a lot the guys pay league fees,” said league director Tom Kostiw.

Some of the guys travel from as far as outside Wilmington and Georgetown. It’s a lot of gas money, it’s a lot of time out of your day.

The group said they hope to work alongside Myrtle Beach Parks and Recreation officials in remodeling the facility to make it more reliable.

Unfortunately we had another week foiled by our poorly constructed rink combined with the dew point. Here’s to hoping...

“Its an unfortunate situation that rink is just like any other field or facility we have where it’s conducive to weather,” said City of Myrtle Beach Parks and Recreation Director Dustin Jordan. “If the weather isn’t holding up there may be situations where you have to cancel games and practices.”

Jordan said city officials discussed remodeling the facility, originally built in 2010, but the project was deemed not cost effective.

In 2018 the facility was rented 33 times for an estimated $1,800 in revenue, according to Jordan.

“We would definitely like to see more usage of it as compared to other facilities the demand in that facility is very much on the low end of the spectrum,” he said.

Kostiw said he believes the usage is low, but believes an investment in a new facility would be a welcomed change.

“I know that if we had an updated rink we could bring in tournaments. We could fill these hotels if we had a reliable rink where we could bring people down here.”
