MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - After 51 years of operation, Possum Trot Golf Course in North Myrtle Beach is expected to close later this year.
Possum Trot general manager George Gore says the property’s owner does not plan to renew the lease on the course, which runs out on September 30.
The course, originally designed by Russell Breeden, has been in Gore’s family since 1981. Gore says his father ran the course until he passed away just a couple years ago. Another of Gore’s golf courses, Heather Glen, closed in November 2017.
“Golfers are aging out and younger people are not picking it up,” says Gore.
He says his family has seen how the sport has changed. Gore says in the 80s and 90s, business was really good, but now things are different.
“Golf is a losing business. If someone can find a way out, they’re going to get out,” says Gore.
